Perma-dirt is a word we used to describe the ingrained dirt stains that never came out of your clothing even after being washed. Heres a picture of my 'dirt back pack'. The straps can be seen outlined over my shoulders. This also happened to your skin. Dirt would get ingrained in the calluses on your hands, and then never leave 😂. After a while you just accept that this is how you are. #realityofathruhiker #hikertrash #camp #hitchhike #pct #pct2019 #pcta #campout #thetrek #thruhike #longdistancehike #trekthepct #withguthook #yosemite #halfdome #pacificcresttrail #sierranevada #jmt #travel #backpacking

Swipe for detail video! Just got this one up in the shop, which marks a big step for me of doing my own art prints! . You can follow my website link in bio to “SHOP” to access this print ✌🏽 . This took a ton of research and trial and error. My mind was swirling with all the new terminology I was learning: icc profiles are where I nearly lost it! But overall I do love learning new things. Most importantly, now I can offer almost any piece of artwork on my page for sale without having to print a minimum amount or worry whether the print shop will get the same quality I am looking for! . If you see any work you like on my feed you’d like to inquire about prints - send me a message! I should note that some originals have sold which means no prints will be available of certain pieces😉 . 🖤🌌 Mars . . . . . #marsnapart #hikertrash #digitalart #traditionalart #artistsofinsragram #mtkatahdin #katahdin #appalachiantrail #appalachiantrailart #nobo #hyoh #hikemaine #baxterstatepark #thetrek #thruhiker #thruhike #mountkatahdin #themountainsarecalling #hikemore #hikelikeagirl #starrynight #thruhikerthursday #cosmicart #galaxyart #outdoorfolk #mountainart #mountainlove #hikevibes #findmeoutside #thruhikesyndicate

With hiking season in the rear view mirror, thought I’d take a minute to talk about gear tips. One of my favorite pieces of gear are my glacier fingerless gloves. They have so many purposes. Here I am grabbing a hot cup right off the camping stove. No burnt fingers or searching around for a bandana! They are also great for sun protection, cushioning the hands from using hiking poles all day long, and providing warmth while allowing you to use your hands. They are also great when you are hiking over large boulders or through canyons when you need to scramble and use your hands. For me they are a “must have” part of my gear. What gear can you not do without? #glacierglove #backpackinggear #trekking

If you didn't know, I took a job for the winter at a ski resort in Utah! I'll be living in the Salt Lake area. It was a quick transition from trail to moving out here, definitely a little crazy but totally worth it. I can't wait to explore all that Utah has to offer!

Going through old pictures from the trail has me missing it! The people that care for this trail are pretty darn amazing. Here I am about to enter the “Rollercoaster” section of the AT. All steep ups and downs for 14 miles 😬

NEW EPISODE- today we are joined by @anitrakass who’s a triple crowner and the @pctassociation’s Southern California Regional Representative. We talk about the new permitting rules for the Sierra and southbounders, some of the biggest threats to the trail, how to best get involved as a volunteer for the PCT, CrossFit, and more. Chaunce and Badger give a peek into their first aid kits, we anoint the triple crown of chips, and get some advice from a listener on how to ease kids into the backcountry without annoying others. #backpackerradio #thetrek

10 miles - 3,000 feet of elevation gain Amazing #hikeup Mt Townsend. We got some new gear for our future #appalachiantrail #thruhikeso we decided to go for an overnight #backpackingtrip! It was a little cold when the sun went down, but we couldn't have asked for better weather. Views of Seattle, the Puget Sound, Strait of Juan de Fuca, San Juan Islands, Olympic Mountain Range, and the Cascade Range including views from Canada to Mt Baker and all the way down to Mount St Helens. We were literally above the clouds. We could see the entire peninsula that Port Townsend sits on and even picked out Hudson Point (where I work). #hikertrash #theTrek #washington #PNW #olympicmountains #backpacker

As the 1st would approach, and I scrambled to climb my final string of peaks, the tone of the project would inevitably shift. . My time on the trail felt heavy, but also incredibly focused. I was willing to hike at any hour, on very little sleep, in very grim conditions, in order to continue moving forward toward my goal. . One more reminder for y’all that I’m speaking at @milestogosports this Saturday, November 23rd at 7:00PM. . This one came up quick, but I couldn’t be more ready to continue sharing the story of the Single Year Grid. Let’s gooo!

Oh MAN I love this park in the rain! After an unusually dry monsoon season, Zion got its first significant rain in several months yesterday. The walls of Zion canyon come alive with waterfalls during heavy rain, since the desert landscape is not the best at absorbing large amounts of water (hence flash floods). This waterfall is always one of the best, at the Temple of Sinawava just before the entrance to the Narrows.

Friday, April 12 | Day 15 | 📍Hiked to mile 209.5, camped under the I-10 near Cabazon PCT miles hiked: 21.5 Lost the trail early. Got help from MacGyver through Fuller Ridge. Saw @mafowler_ at the campground. Met Canary and Lawless (not Wallace!). Along the way I saw Rosie from the windy campsite the night before last. @socalscotchie came to meet me at the freeway exit (Haugen-Lehmann Road) and took me to In-N-Out. 🍔🍟🥤Had a double-double, ketchup instead of sauce, grilled onions, fries and a chocolate shake. He brought me bananas, a pear, Kit-Kats, a bottle of Pellegrino and two cold cans of LaCroix that I downed in my tent. ⛺️It was unsettling to see car lights along Tamarack Road but eventually I got some sleep.😳

September 17th. 10.9 miles back from Stowe on a cloudy day. This was also the must frustrating night on the whole trip as it was damn near impossible to hang our bear bag (I broke the first branch from how heavy the bags were) and we settled in around 8:30 pm where we would already be sound asleep. This was also a really weird night, I felt like I was being watched whenever I was walking around the camp. Many of you guessed it! Tonight I head to Portland cause tomorrow I’m getting a tattoo to commemorate our experience on the PCT. This will be my fourth tattoo. Here are my tattoo stories: . DNA helix on my ankle in brown ink, age 18. I got this tattoo as soon as I was old enough to get a tattoo. I had been thinking about it for years, ever since I had learned about evolution in school and simultaneously put to bed any inklings of religious fervor I might have been feeling at that time. It definitely represented for me knowing and not knowing, the grand mysteries of the universe and the skepticism inherent in scientific theory. I certainly no longer staunchly believe that science is the only way of knowing but I still love this tattoo and the stories it brings back for me about my young self. . Sailboat line drawing tattoo in the middle of my back, brown ink, age 18. Because I was 18 and making my own money I quickly went out and got myself a second tattoo. This one was very simple and small, a sailboat. I grew up sailing with my family so in many ways it represented them. But it also represented my connection to Puget Sound and the salty, briny breeze that I love so much. And on a deeper level it represented one of the first fears I conquered. When I was little I loved to sail but as I got older I was grappling with a lot of fears and sailing really freaked me out. The deep ocean, the leaning and swaying of the boat. I didn’t sail for years. And then in high school I kind of rediscovered it and started learning how to quell my fear when it rose up in my throat. My dad would take me and fifteen of my friends out on Wednesday nights and we would race and I discovered the joy that lives at the edge of a butterfly filled stomach. . AT trail shield, forearm, black ink, age 26. I got my AT tattoo right before we left for the PCT. I like to think about tattoos for a long time. So instead of slapping it on right away after the AT I waited and pondered and knew what I wanted. Simple. Straightforward. A symbol that had been so much a part of our lives for so many miles. Forever my first. . Tomorrow I welcome number four. For the PCT. . Tell me about your tattoos.

Brady here - As a kid, I really liked photography. I even asked my mom to buy me a camera for my birthday one year. But as the years passed by, I forgot about my interest in capturing moments and scenery. That is until Carlie. She loves photography and encouraged me to learn about cameras, settings, techniques, editing, etc. I still have a lot to learn but my passion for filming and photos is growing. I struggle with framing my shots though. Getting the right angle, with the subject in the correct portion of the frame, with the background in the right amount of focus, and a level image is hard for me. I've been told that comes with time so I will continue to improve! • • In a few months, Carlie and I will be setting off to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. We are going to use our time on the trail to boost our creativity and improve our skills as photographers and film makers. That means carrying several cameras and battery packs, etc. Our base weight just went out the window. Haha. We know there are mixed feelings about filming and photography while thru-hiking. Some say it ruins the experience because you are behind the lens so much or that you can't really enjoy the trail because you are focused on your photos or videos; some are like us and want to film and some just don't care at all. For us, it is important that we don't let our passions die while on the trail but instead, they flourish and grow. We hope to see you out on the trail.

Day 135 | 0 miles We woke up @arhhaven to a dusting of snow on the ground and some bitter winds. We couldn’t have planned a more perfect day to get caught up on life off trail and enjoy the comforts of a hostel. After we resupplied, the guys convinced me to go to La Barranca for one of their infamous margaritas. I had work to do post happy hour for a post trail contract, so these two crushed the remainder of my margarita with style. #appalachiantrail #appalachiantrail2019 #at2019 #backpacking #trektheat #atclassof2019 #atsobo2019 #atsobo #sobo #thruhike #thruhiker #takeahike #hikingadventures #liveyouradventure #thetrek #withguthook #goforthefunofit #wanderlust #everytrailconnects #choosemountains #keepitwild #nature #outlivingit #optoutside #virginia

Day 218 on the AT: Rt 2/Williamstown to Thunderbolt Emergency Shelter. 7.3 miles. Today was the last big climb in the North for me. Mt Greylock. Although I wanted it to be clear. Grey and snow felt appropriate. I was planning on stopping at the next Shelter that was 3 miles away but once I saw 4 walls I was already sold. After Mt Greylock the terrain looks a little easier so I’m looking forward to taking advantage of those days. I came in and started cooking. Had to use my flashlight on my phone since I lost my headlamp and then dropped it and cracked the screen. I can still use it so that’s good. So much adversity on my way out the North. I still think about my time on the #PCTfor most of the day, I loved every part of it. Looking back on it even the days that we were completely miserable, tired, cold, wet, frustrated and hungry are still better then most days off trail. I received my PCT completion letter from the #pctaand on the same day I received a violation notice by the #usforestservicefor the use of the guard shack at #hartspass. Now I know trespassing in a building that’s owned by the #unitedstatesis #illegal, but I think there is a time and place in which some rules can be broken. I don’t want you to think I’m bragging or think it’s cool to break rules but I believe we were in a situation that it was acceptable. I did break into the guard shack but I did so in a way that nothing was damaged and it could be returned to its original state. We cleaned up after ourselves and left it better then we found it minus some firewood. I just want to know if anyone else would do the same thing we did? Imagine your cold, wet ,exhausted with at least 3 more days of walking through snow, and your sleeping bag is also wet and you haven’t felt your feet in 4 days. I’m not mad or upset about the fine, I did break the law. It is a small price to pay for the warmth and rejuvenation that little cabin gave us so we could make it to #canada!!Also posting yourself on social media doing something illegal is not very smart, take note. If you want to see what the conditions were like leading up to the decision to break laws, check out video #36I’ll put a link in my bio. In the shadow of your majesty. Last summer I decided to tackle a section of the #PCTin the the #Sierrasfrom Kearsarge Pass to Bishop Pass. Arguably one of the most beautiful sections is the Rae Lakes. I captured this amazing sunset behind Fin Dome as one of the toughest days came to a close after going over Glen Pass. The Rae Lakes loop is one of the most popular hikes from King’s Canyon National Park. The route I took was not as popular and it was easy to get a midweek walk up permit at the Lone Pine Ranger Station starting from Onion Valley. 🌲 On previous hikes in the SoCal desert sections of the PCT I was easily doing 12-15 miles per day. In the Sierra I had planned approximately 8-10 miles per day due to the elevation and the 5 passes over 11,000 feet. I thought I could finish in about 6-7 days. 🏕 Sometimes it is necessary to recognize your limits and call a hike. I gave myself a bailout point down Woods Creek to the trailhead at King’s Canyon National Park. If I had gone over Pinchot Pass I knew there was no easy bailout. I would have to go all the way to Bishop Pass. It was a tough decision but when I calculated the time I had against the decreased daily mileage I knew it was not possible with my time limit. This is one of the struggles for section hikers. 🏔 Through hikers at this point on the PCT have gone over 800 miles and have their trail legs and are much more acclimated to the elevation. When section hiking there is always the looming deadline and miles to be divided over days. 🏕 When planning section hikes, especially days from civilization, it is always prudent to know alternate stopping points. Never assume one section is like another. Anything from nature to injuries can throw you off. Also do careful research to determine if the alternate trail exits are accessible for your ride or getting a hitch to town. Many alternates are not maintained or heavily trafficked. This is why I always plan my section hikes #withguthookand with maps from National Geographic. I also always carry my Garmin inReach Explorer+ to stay in touch. 🏔 I will be posting more photos and even some videos from this amazing section in the near future.

What do I miss? Well it may seem trivial. But I miss those few days when our group had footprints to follow in the Sierra. That tiny little thing meant everything. It meant not having to pull out guthooks every fifteen minutes. It meant that even though we hadn't seen anyone else in 5 days we were not alone in the vast landscape that is the Sierra. It made me realize that we were all in this together and if they can make it, so can I. This was the Sierra in May, so those footprints quickly disappeared. But those few days following in the footprints of the people just ahead of us made me realize the meaning of gratitude, and I just miss being thankful for the trivial things in life . . . . . . #pct #pct2019 #pctig #pcta #thetrek #mexicotocanada #optoutside #outdoors #nature #sierra #wildandfree #outdoor #hike #camp #sierranevada #explore #adventuremore #adventure  #thruhike #wander #wanderlust #nomad #REI1440project #mountains #sonyalpha #choosemountains #explorecalifornia #california #hikertrash #backpacking

Just stand over there. That’s the words I yelled to Alys while we were buffeted by winds we couldn’t walk straight in, pointing to a small rock ridge in front of the massive weather front that was spilling over from the West Coast. The straps on the bag, plus the lean (not really accurately shown) and stance just show how bloody windy it was at the top of Mt Oxford on Saturday. The clouds over the mountains on the other side of the valley hit us five minutes after taking this photo. We desperately walked through sideward rain that felt like it was tearing at any exposed skin trying to reach the top. We hid behind a bush awhile later assessing the situation, hoping that the cloud may move; but after having some lunch the rain hadn’t, and the temperature was still decreasing. We retreated to the bushline, not being able to make it to the top this time. She never made it closer to the edge than this – she took one step closer, and the wind blew her two steps back. What are the worst conditions you have been struck with when out walking? . . ---- @canon.nz 5D MkIII @canon.nz EF 28-105mm f/3.5 ISO 500 1/250 seconds ----
