Every time I smell pomanders I think of Christmas. The history of the pomme d’ambre (apple of amber, pomander) goes back to the Middle Ages and had a variety of uses. It was used in witchcraft, as a religious keepsake, certainly to keep one smelling fresh, and finally as a symbol for this holiday season. It wasn’t always an orange (one recipe called for bezoin, calamity and balsam to be melted then formed into a ball with spices) however the orange pomander has made a comeback in recent years as an easy and delicious smelling holiday craft. .
