Huacachina you beauty. . The common Gringo trail from Lima to Cusco is a must but if you're taking the coach then good luck for those who get travel sick easily. 🤢 . Stopping off at a few touristy towns. Huacachina which is near Ica is pretty banging. Desert views, dune buggies and sand boarding. . A very different town from most others, really nice community feel about it too. For a banging cheap meal/hostel go to Banana's Adventure - Huacachina. . #huacachina #gringotrail #peru #dessert #oasis #Ica

The final South American frontier. Almost exactly 6 months to the day of looking out over the frozen peaks of Ushuaia (the most southerly point of South America), I stood looking at the sunset over the wild Caribbean at Punta Gallinas (at the opposite pole of South America). Getting to that final point on the original Gringo Trail map felt like a suitably end-of-the-road experience involving 3 bone-rattling days bouncing across barren desert and wheel-spinning through bogs (a tow-rescue was required at one point). The type of landscape you’d think was completely inhabitable, but was dotted with indigenous villages, and kids holding colourful ropes across the tracks to beg for treats. Heart wrenching and uplifting all at the same time to see their smiling faces all at the same time. Sharing the experience with the great Team Lord (long story) was a heap of fun and made the rough ride bearable. And we slept surprisingly well in our hammock-dorms, even when a mega storm threatened to flood us out one night. A proper adventure needs a good supply of stories. And the reward of the stunningly rugged and deserted coastline of sand dunes rolling into the Caribbean when we hit the edge of the continent. We wasted no time in racing down the dunes and straight into the waves (after getting a few shots by the well-placed sign obviously). The perfect round off to my epic South American odyssey. It was impossible not to feel slightly overwhelmed watching the sunset over that scene, and contemplating the 7,400 kilometres and the countless unforgettable experiences I’d amassed along the trial. It’s nothing short of dizzying! Thank you South America, you great big, insanely beautiful continent! #endoftheworld #thelasthurrah #gringotrail

#reiselust #oldtownsquare #guatemalacom #reiseblogger #antiguaguatemala #reisefieber #explorethecity #weltreise #churchesoftheworld #gringotrail #travelguatemala #altstadt #exploraguatemala #reisetagebuch #explorandoguatemala #travelblogger #reiseführer

Deserted beaches and tropical storms in Tayrona National Park. No self-respecting backpacker leaves Colombia without a trip to the promised-paradise of Tayrona. So, daypack loaded with a gallon of water and bedecked in humidity-friendly leisurewear, I rocked up to the park gates early & raring. I was somewhat surprised to be greeted by Disneyland-style turnstyles and recorded announcements blasting the park rules, especially as the ticket lines were practically empty. But reassured by the promise of deserted beaches, I hoped on the shuttle bus and got chatting with an English-Dutch threesome of fellow backpackers. Making it a foursome, we made a snap decision to head for the nearest viewpoint to get our first glimpse of the fabled beaches. It was only a 15-minute walk through thick jungle but we were dripping. I’ve never experienced the phrase ‘sweating from every pore’ until now. The humidity was insane! But our minimal efforts were paid off by the sight of stunning stretch of golden beach backdropped by jungle running as far as the distant mountain line. We’d found El Dorado! As the “don’t be a statistic” warning signs attested, the rip tides in Tayrona are pretty wild so we had a 2-hour trek before we hit the first swimmable beach. The urge to jump into those turquoise waters was water torture. But after sticking to the sticky shade of the jungle, we hit the calm jackpot of La Piscina and wasted no time in diving right into the blue. It was amazing! After a couple of hours spent sun-roasting and sea-cooling, I forged onto the popular beach of Cabo San Juan and my hammock for the night. It wasn’t hard to see why it was, with’s it’s laguna sweep and it’s perfectly positioned rock right in the middle. The camping area had the distinctive feel of a musical festival (the only music being the standard reggaeton soundtrack being blasted from the snack bar). Things took an interesting turn when the brilliant blue sky suddenly turned a threatening shade of purple-grey and a mega storm rolled in. So, the rest of the evening was spent watching incredible fork-lightening boom across the horizon from the comfort of my hammock #sleptlikealog #colombiacatchup #gringotrail

Mist and meandering wildlife in Minca. Taking a little breather from the insane humidity of the Caribbean coast, I did another runner to the hills. In this case, to the low-hanging cloud-clad hills of Minca to check in to another highly-recommended retreat on a coffee estate; the rustic luxe of Casa Vieja. The rumour were undeniable that it was a stunner of a spot, with uninterrupted views down to the distant coastline of Santa Marta (that I’d just left behind). And good thing the remote perch was worth the mildly terrifying mototaxi journey up pot-holed dirt tracks. My hands were in clench-lock for a good hour after dismount! And the sight of a hammock was a very welcome one to help recover my nerves and bury my head in a book. The next three days passed in a routine dictated by the erratic weather system, waking up to find the Casa entirely engulfed by cloud, clearing to a sunny afternoon break, before almighty storms flashed across the coastal horizon and unleashed evening torrents. The various hammock vantage points to watch it all unfold was the atmospheric charm of the place. Plus, great food and company helped the hours while away very nicely too. The hostel just seemed to attract a lovely laid-back crowd. I took my chances during the weather breaks to venture out across the surrounding coffee-clad hills to explore deserted waterfalls, swimming holes and some rather unexpected animal encounters along the way (scroll the pictures for the line up to be revealed). The dice roll didn’t always land in my favour, with my waterproofs getting a full-drench test on a couple of occasions. Luckily, there was always a constant supply of freshly brewed coffee (it doesn’t get much fresher, being roasted on site) and delicious home-cooked meals to dry me from the inside, out. It’s wasn’t hard to see why people always ended up staying that extra night, which is exactly what I did #mincameanders #animalencountersofthethirdkind #lifeonthecoffeefarm #gringotrail

Photos from the beautiful Santa Cruz Trek outside of Huaraz, Peru. Most groups hike the trail over 4 days, but we covered nearly 40 miles in 3 days, including a longer-than-normal route in order to camp at Alpamayo basecamp at the end of day 1. On day 2, we reached the high point of the trail, the Punta Union pass, at 4,760 m / 15,617 ft. Two lighthouses. One at the most southernly tip of South America (Ushuaia, Argentina) and the other, the extreme north (Punta Gallinas, Colombia)... meaning I’ve managed to cover the full length of this incredible continent! All 7,400 beautifully-diverse as-the-crow-flies kilometres of it. It was a pretty special moment looking out at the waves of a different ocean breaking along the wild dessert coastline. The perfect spot to contemplate the equally incredible journey I’ve been on over the last 6 months - spectacular, soul-lifting and transformative are a few words that spring to mind. The adventure isn’t quite over yet though, so I’ll leave it there for now #thelongwayup #soulfulsouthamerica #gringotrail

The two days of great light and perfect weather trekking in Colca Canyon were some of the most photogenic days I’ve spent in South America so far, and I ended up with so many great photos of this beautiful place! • Day one of the trek begins by descending on switchbacks through dry, desert-like rock formations covered in cactuses down to the river at the bottom of the canyon. After crossing the bridge to the other side, the trail continues through lush, green farmland with beautiful views and ends at the Sangelle oasis where we stayed the night. The next morning, we left the oasis at around 4:30am to ascend the 1,300 m / 4,265 ft back up and over rim of the canyon to the small town of Cabanaconde. The Santa Marta run around. Having torn myself from my deckchair in Rincon, I headed for the Colombian coastal city of Santa Marta. Another place that I had multiple tips to skip but I decided to give it a 24-hour shot and sweep the sights. And I have no regrets. There’s no denying it might not ooze the colonial charm of Cartagena but it radiated a more laid-back local feel (and a welcome lack of “sombrero amigo?” cries every other minute). So, I spent leisurely Sunday wandering the streets of the old town and yet another Gold Museum (it seems Colombia is dripping with ancient gold!) before heading out to the national monument of Quinto de San Pedro Alejandrino - the family estate where Simon Bolívar (the liberator of pretty much all South American countries) spent his final days. And seen as I’ve lost count of the number of statues and plazas I’ve seen dedicated to the man over the last few months, I figured I should pay my respects. The well-tended grounds and distinct lack of tourists made for a tranquil afternoon stroll. And just the antidote to the spontaneous night of rooftop salsa-ing that my new dorm mates talked me into (my sexual preference has unfortunately not overridden my innate British inability to dance!). I think I just about maintained a shred of dignity in using my fall-back shuffle. And I had fun watching the local pros. Sure fire proof that expectations lead to pleasant surprises though #cityhopping #santamartashuffle #gringotrail

Beach combing and clear-water cruising in Rincon del Mar. After 6 months of trail-blazing, I’d finally hit the Colombian coast so it was high-time for some beach lounging. And thanks to a tip-off from my ever-reliable queen of bouj @malchande, I landed at the beautifully balanced @dosaguaslodge, as the perfect spot to sprawl, opening out to nothing but never-ending beach and wide open ocean to enjoy. It generally takes my restless feet a good while to plant in one spot but the transition to hammock hibernation was instantaneous in the sleepy fishing village of Rincon. I was clearly ready for a time out. Even the rolling daily thunder storms were a welcome spectator event, especially with a tamarind mojitos in hand. The biggest physical exertion involved the 12 paces from hammock to motorboat to head out on a bead hop of the neighbouring San Bernardo islands. It was hard to believe with the turquoise-clear shallows and golden fine sands that we weren’t pulling into some luxury resort. I’m starting to understand why this stretch of the gringo trail is such a backpacker hit; a shoestring paradise. But the highlight of my stay was a nighttime boat trip to swim with glowing plankton. Watching the sunset as we jetted across the bay, we rowed through a narrow channel to reach a still, moonlit laguna with nothing obvious happening. It was only when we jumped off the boat that the surreal phenomenon erupted - with tiny green lights darting across our skin, creating a fluorescent glow around our floating bodies - like some superhero power in a Marvel film. It was a magical experience in the true sense of the word. I could have stayed in Rincon for weeks but the Colombian countdown clock was ticking, so these restless feet are on the move again #restfulrincon #boujeebackpacking #caribbeancruising #gringotrail

One year ago today I was about a month into the most difficult period of my life, & almost canceled my first date with this guy 🙃 I was on the verge of either getting laid off or potentially relocating to the UK for work; I was struggling to walk away from a relationship with a toxic individual that treated me like dirt and made me feel terrible about myself—Basically my life was falling apart and I wasn’t in any place to be dating. 3 continents, 30+ flights, a new job, a kitten, a long distance relationship, and half of an MBA program later- there hasn’t been a single day since I met him that he’s let me go through anything alone. Thank you for helping me pick up the pieces and use them to build something better together than i ever could have solo @khaledscamera ❤️ you make even the hardest days easy!

Colonial wanders and ceviche-feasting in Cartagena. We couldn’t let @zjc0701 leave Colombia without a taste of the Caribbean so we made a final hop to the city straddling the Pacific and Caribbean adventure oceans. That Caribbean heat hit us right between the eyes the moment we stepped off the plane, before the city served up a real feast for the eyes. I’ve seen my fair share of colonial cities over the last 6 months (as you’re probably more than aware!) but Cartagena takes the beauty biscuit for its postcard-perfect streets of every pastel hue. And it didn’t hurt its cause that we arrived just in time for a stunner of a sunset across the city walls. She was pulling out all the stops. The other surprise was how tourist-filled and eye-wateringly bouquee the place was. Cartagena has the highest US-tourist density I’ve experienced anywhere in South America (Panama hats and khaki pants everywhere!). But I guess my previous comments explain that. So, we left with no choice but to dump the backpacks and join the flashpacks wandering the pretty streets and intermittently diving into the AC of the nearest cafe/bar/boutique to avoid full melt in the sweltering heat. And when the fanciness of the old town became too obscene, we retreated to the backpacker-haven of Getsemani with it’s street art solace, or jumped on a boat to soak up some rays at the urban beach with the locals. Cartagena made for a good Colombian all-rounder for the last stop on the Zara whip-around and that was left was to indulge in a final seafood feast at a Bourdain-famed favourite @lacevicheriacartagena. A very fitting end to an awesome-packed couple of weeks. Nothing beats adventuring with one of your favourite faces so thanks for making it epic @zjc0701 #boujeebackpacking #cartagenacruising #farewellfishyfeast #gringotrail

The climbing of a big bizarre rock in Guatape. Medellín’s pace was a bit too much for us to handle, so we took a daytrip out to the cute and colourful little town of Guatape. After spending a couple of hours admiring the chintzy bas-reliefs adorning every building and awarding a plethora of awards (the Pink Panther triumph of plaster taking the award for Best Use of a 80s Icon), me and @zjc0701 decided to do the only thing left to down in town - climb the 750 steps of its huge and inexplicable rock. And the view of the surrounding lagunas was worth the sweatathon. Guatape: check #greatguatape #itsallaboutthebasrelief #onestrangerock #gringotrail

Lessons from modern history in the metropolis of Medellín. Arriving to the sprawl of high-rise blocks and beeping horns was a bit of a shock after leaving the green blanket of the coffee zone. And I’d be lying if I said we weren’t feeling a smidgen of trepidation at the thought of spending three days in the once infamous murder capital of the world (probably shouldn’t have rewatched Narcos whilst travelling Colombia!!). But 15 years after Escobar was shot on roofs of Medellín’s most dangerous barrio, we were greeted by a transformed and poised city. And the catalyst being thanks to an impressive sweep of urban planning that has connected the city and untied communities; the biggest point of pride transport system of metros, trams, cablecars and even open-air escalators systems and slides (which are pant-splittingly fun!). It’s hard to ignore Medellín’s violent past and luckily the Paisas (Medellín’s residents) don’t either! Our local walking tour guides and a newly opened Museum of Memory laid the bloody details bare, but with moderation and sensitivity (a far cry from the Netflix glamorisation!). The whole city feels like an act of rebellion against its criminal past and what’s emerged is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city; the type that hosts internationals food festivals, fills it streets with art and parties hard ever night of the week - and of course me and @zjc0701 happily obliged. You can’t help but admire Medellin; its loud, proud and heaps of fun #modernistmedellin #loudandproud #pabloescoblah #gringotrail

I often asked myself “Am I really in Nicaragua?” “Alone?” “Did I really start in Mexico City and end up here?” “By foot?” “Aloneee?” And I have to say that my Central America backpacking trip was one of the most thrilling things I have ever done by myself. It was a solo trip that had so much range and discovery. Mexico, Guatemala and then Nicaragua (with some border crossings in El Salvador and Honduras). One would assume that these countries might even be remotely similar, and it some cases they might even be correct. But for me, I saw so many differences within ethnic groups of people, city designs, types of beaches and of course local cuisine. Not to mention this is an extremely cheap gringo trail, if all of the countries are to be reached by foot. I found shuttle buses very easy to organise, as they were pretty much located in almost every place I visited. Are 8-19 hour bus journeys for everyone? No. Will they allow your travels to develop more range and adventure for a reasonable price? Yes. Is almost everything in Latin America cost effective for travelers? Even more so. This includes, hostels, food and activities. If you count all of these things within a daily budget, you might spend between £10-20 a day. Though I could never sell this part of the world as an ideal travel location without mentioning the people. They are the warmest and kindhearted folk I have ever met. #granada #nicaragua #latinamerica #gringotrail #centralamerica #backpacking #solotravel #blacktravel #girlslovetravel #travelwriter #traveldiary #travelblog #travelphotography #colonial #pueblosmagicos #gate #door #colourcontrast #travelnoire

Cloud forests and coffee quaffing in Salento. After draining the batteries in Bogotá, we headed for Colombia’s Coffee Zone to attach a caffeine drip and recharge. And we found the perfect plug point in an awesome hostel-cum-farm that came complete with two teddy-bear soft German shepherds and a hummingbird filled garden (plus an unlimited supply of the black stuff obviously). The first day priority was to sharpen our coffee knowledge so we followed a river through the lushest of green valleys to reach a family-run Finca; where we received our full instruction in the art of coffee production in the form of a two hour private tour and sample of the finest local brew. And a self-confessed coffee fiend, it’s turn out I knew embarrassingly little. But armed with a whole new appreciation we ventured on to visit the tourist magnet of a town, Salento to check out its colourful doors and sample some more of the good stuff (the standard two-cups-a-day cap goes out of the window when you’re in Rome). And our timing was impeccable as our visit coincided with the 177 anniversary of the town (who knew that a celebration-worthy milestone?!); cue a subdued speech from the major and a rousing round of patriotic anthems from the local school band. Its comforting to know that these parochial events are celebrated in the twee parochial style the world round). The next day called for a bracing walk to work out the caffeine overload and the evening’s excitement, so we hopped on a Willy (the odd local name for a 4x4) and hit the Cocora Valley to marvel at the world’s largest palm trees. And there’s no denying they’re darn ginormous! Looking all the more otherworldly for breaching the cloud line of the vast valley. And adding another item to the list of South American natural wonders, and forcing the question if I was delusional from all the coffee consumption #contentcatchup #caffiend #bigasstrees #gringotrail
