insta, meet petey! no, he isn’t a new addition - we’ve actually had him since 2013. he’s about 9 years old and he’s my dad’s dog. petey is completely unrelated to beau, but they look and act alike so much that it makes you wonder haha. he surprised us by behaving very well on this hike, so you’ll probably be seeing a lot more of him! he doesn’t have a lot of training and is a lot more dog selective than beau, so in the past i haven’t taken him out much. beau is still a work in progress but he’s much more highly trained, has a solid recall, and knows good trail manners, so he’s a much more comfortable option for me to take out and i know i’ll enjoy myself on long hikes with him (also he’s my personal dog, soo, there’s that 😂). the biggest issue that petey has is that he’s a relentless puller, but i’ve started to introduce him to a prong collar and teach him the concept of pressure, and he’s picked up on it very quickly - this made it very easy for my boyfriend to handle him, which was especially important bc our hike to and from the fire tower involved one of the steepest half miles we’ve ever hiked (or should i say CLIMBED 😂) and a dog that pulls can quickly become a hazard on hikes like that. Beau has learned a good habit of going down a few steps and waiting for me before moving again, so he’s permitted to be off leash so i can use both of my hands to maneuver myself up/down (i’m a baby about steep endeavors and will butt slide my way down 🤪). pete’s only slip-up happened when we were approached by a couple’s off leash staffy and he tried to pounce on it 🙄 not that he was at fault - he was leashed - but it was still a very inappropriate greeting that could’ve gotten a bad response and i’m glad the people retrieved their dog and kept walking so he could regain himself lol. he just gets way too excited and overworked with stranger dogs. but overall we are proud of him! also, he did 10x better than beau on the fire tower - beau started to panic and shake once we reached the top, meanwhile petey didn’t give a shiz about the height nor the weird texture of the structure.
