This one from 2018 is a great example of her portraits. The artist depicts people sleeping that are so soft and translucent, as if the figure itself is drifting off into dreamscape and leaving reality. The paintings are sensitive and tranquil, so still, yet transient. It is almost like trying to catch a moment in your dream - it seems so real, yet so fleeting. ⠀

Another bananas year at #ABMB,showing for the first time in the beautiful courtyard of the Ice Palace at @newartdealers with my NEW DIRECTOR @habitualtruant charming visitors, making friends, and getting us on all the best party lists. Somehow feeling acceptance of ‘artfairs’ after this experience, and particularly the frenzy that is Miami. I love it, what can I say! It was super fun to exhibit these works from @theo.trian and @gifnugget together, they will be featured in a 2-person show at TRANSFER LA in 2020. One of the reasons I make my work modular and immersive is that it can constantly grow into new spaces, like the fungi patterns I often get inspiration from to build sculptures in the first place. I like the idea of being able to install in any context and build up my works using the library of patterns I’ve been downloading into my hand technique over years (plus the beauty of computer design for the large scale acrylic cutouts). My goal is to transport the audience into a realm of dangerous beauty, questioning and reversing the audience gaze into a kaleidoscope. The work as a whole can give a soothing effect as the viewer slips into the cascade of reflections. Living in the infinite information realm we inhabit, one can let go and dissolve in the Faerie space...

The vessels are a true exploration of negative space and a reversal of what one might think of porcelain crafting.⠀
⠀
With his hands, the artist digs shapes and tunnel systems into boxes filled with compacted sand, using only the feeling of his hands to guide him. Liquid porcelain is then poured into the hollow form, leaving the vacuumed parts as the final piece. ⠀

The value of a banana, in human terms, is at the moment of consumption. Not only that, value also lies in how hungry the consumer was when they ate the banana and the state of the banana when it was eaten (was it at its optimum level of freshness when it was eaten?) When a banana becomes raw material for the art of a famous European male artist exploiting his position to make a statement about a capitalist art world that he and his gallery have long profited from, you get cynicism disguised as cleverness. The artist (Maurizio Cattelan) says “I can do anything, and still make a profit.” It’s true, he can. The banana loses its inherent value (in human terms), and now becomes mythologized as art by way of the cult of the artist and HIS market —not THE market. If the artist were to make a statement about how racist and sexist the art world is when determining value and critique his own privileged position within it, I would bother to care. Making a generalized statement about the Capitalist art market and the Debordian spectacle ignores the privilege that is accorded to the few, like Cattelan. Is it art? It will draw countless comparisons to Duchamp’s “Fountain,” which will be its crutch, and it has already surely cemented its place in art history because of its “impact,” but —make no mistake —its premise is based on conceit and entitlement, which clearly equates white male privilege to narcissism.

2008 in the midst of the credit crunch at an event with my gallery to 2019 on a “power panel” at @artmiamifairs on behalf of @womenartdealers. I never would’ve guessed when I had the idea for AWAD several short months after the image on the left where it would take us and what incredible support - including tangible, bottom line, would be experienced by members over the years.
Today marks 15 years that I’ve been a business owner in the art world, having first set up as an art dealer and curator. These days I’m regularly described as a “serial entrepreneur”... little would I have guessed back in the day!
Last week at @artbasel #ABMBl was reflecting upon my first visit to the fair in 2007 vs 2019. This led me to ponder about “success” and determined that it’s down to persistence and patience. Isaac Levy, Co-Founder of @yvel_jewelry (inspiring sponsor of the #ArtMiamievent whose company is in value alignment with #AWAD)added: innovation.
I can see in the expression and posture of the younger me that I was there and ready to take on whatever was to come, and was going to continue to smile, no matter what! The latter point of attitude is what’s seen me through thick and thin, not to mention the supportive community developed over a lifetime. The best you can do is learn from what has already happened and do your utmost to leave the world a better place than it was when you arrived, whatever special contribution you have 🙏. I was also thinking about how incredible it is when people “make it” out on their own as a business. From artists to gallerists, I salute you all 👏👏👏. You, like I, have not chosen an easy path. When things come together, it’s blooming marvellous. The gratitude is humbling.
